Portugal work permit
Portugal offers both an employment (D1) visa for workers with a signed contract and a job-seeker visa that allows you to enter and look for work. Both lead to a residence permit issued after arrival.
Main routes
- D1 subordinate work visa — for applicants with a Portuguese employment contract.
- Job seeker visa — entry to search for employment, convertible to a residence permit.
- Highly qualified activity visa — for specialist and management roles.
Core requirements
- Employment contract or promise of contract (D1 route)
- Portuguese tax number (NIF) and a local bank account
- Proof of accommodation and means of subsistence
- Criminal record certificate, apostilled and translated
- Travel health insurance valid in Portugal
How the process works
- Step 1 — Eligibility check and route selection.
- Step 2 — NIF, contract and supporting documents.
- Step 3 — Visa application at the Portuguese consulate / VFS.
- Step 4 — Arrival, social security number and AIMA residence permit appointment.
