Canada work permit guide
A Canadian work permit lets a foreign national work for a Canadian employer for a limited time. Two broad types exist: employer-specific permits (usually LMIA-based) and open permits.
Employer-specific permits
Tied to a named employer, job and location. Most require a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from the employer, which confirms no Canadian worker was available for the role.

LMIA-exempt permits
Under the International Mobility Program: intra-company transfers, CUSMA/CETA professionals, Global Talent Stream, spouses of skilled workers or students, and other categories.
Open work permits
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — for graduates of eligible Canadian programs.
- Spousal open work permit — for spouses of skilled workers or international students.
- International Experience Canada (IEC) — for youth from partner countries.
Typical documents
- Job offer letter and (if applicable) positive LMIA
- Educational and professional credentials
- Passport, photographs, biometrics
- Proof of funds, police clearance, medical exam where required
