Canada study permit (student visa)

A Canadian study permit allows international students to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Most study permit holders can also work part-time during studies under current IRCC rules.

Eligibility basics

  • Letter of Acceptance from a DLI
  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) where required
  • Proof of funds for tuition and living expenses
  • Genuine student intent — clear study plan and ties to home country
  • Language test results (typically IELTS Academic)

SDS (Student Direct Stream)

A faster processing route available to residents of specific countries who meet higher language and financial requirements, including a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC). Eligibility rules change; always verify against the current IRCC page.

Work and post-study options

Study permit holders may work up to the current IRCC-permitted hours per week off-campus. Eligible graduates can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which is often a stepping stone toward permanent residence.
