Indian applicants now apply through the regular Canada study permit process because the Student Direct Stream, or SDS, ended on November 8, 2024.

The applicant must normally obtain a valid Letter of Acceptance from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution, or DLI.

A Provincial Attestation Letter or Territorial Attestation Letter may be required, depending on the applicant’s category and current Canadian rules.

For applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, one applicant studying outside Quebec must show at least CAD $23,448 for first-year living expenses. This amount does not include tuition fees or transportation costs.

Proof of funds may include tuition payment evidence, education loan documents, bank statements, GIC, sponsor documents, and other acceptable financial evidence. Bank statements for the past 6 months, including the application month or the previous month, together with documents explaining the source of funds, are normally expected.

Eligible international students may work off campus for up to 24 hours per week during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks, subject to permit conditions.

A Post-Graduation Work Permit, or PGWP, is not automatic. Eligibility depends on the institution, campus, program, study level, field of study, program duration, and current IRCC requirements.

Spousal open work permit eligibility is restricted and depends on the student’s qualifying program and current rules.

Starting January 1, 2026, certain master’s and doctoral degree applicants at public DLIs may be exempt from the PAL/TAL requirement. Exact eligibility must always be verified before applying.
